Built on Family, Experience, and Innovation: The Story of North State Resurfacing

the story of North State Resurfacing

When schools, municipalities, athletic clubs, and private facilities invest in a tennis or basketball court, they’re investing in safety, performance, and long-term value. North State Resurfacing was founded on those same principles—paired with a deep respect for craftsmanship, environmental responsibility, and customer service.

As a family-owned business with decades of hands-on experience, North State Resurfacing continues to raise the standard for court resurfacing and construction across North Carolina and beyond.

A Family Business Built on Hands-On Experience

North State Resurfacing is not a large, impersonal contractor cycling through projects. It is a family-operated company built on generations of involvement and pride in the finished product. That structure directly influences how projects are planned, executed, and supported long after their completion.

North State’s leadership team is closely involved in every phase of work—from estimating project costs and material selection to on-site oversight and final walkthroughs. This approach ensures that we consistently deliver quality, clear communication, and a connection between what clients expect and what is delivered.

Founded with a Vision for Quality and Longevity

North State Resurfacing was co-founded in 1990 with the goal of delivering durable, high-performance tennis courts and basketball courts using proven construction methods and premium materials. From the beginning, the company focused on doing the work right the first time, rather than cutting corners to move quickly between jobs.

That long-term mindset continues to guide decisions today, from choosing certified materials to build pickleball courts and other types of courts to investing in innovative resurfacing systems that extend court life. Our clients benefit from solutions designed not just for appearance, but for consistent playability and reduced maintenance over time.

Family Leadership That Stays Involved

As a family business, leadership at North State Resurfacing is directly accountable for every project outcome. Decision-makers are not removed from the field—they remain accessible, informed, and invested—attributes that set them apart from other companies within the court resurfacing industry.

This hands-on leadership structure allows North State Resurfacing to adapt quickly, solve problems efficiently, and maintain high standards across every court, regardless of size or project scope.

What Sets North State Resurfacing Apart from Competitors

Athletic court construction and resurfacing requires specialized knowledge that many general contractors simply do not have. North State Resurfacing focuses exclusively on this niche, combining experience, innovation, and environmentally responsible practices that distinguish the company from competitors.

Specialization in Tennis, Basketball, Pickleball, and Multi-Use Courts

North State Resurfacing is dedicated specifically to athletic surfaces, including tennis courts, basketball courts, pickleball courts, and multi-purpose recreational spaces. This focus allows our team to understand the nuances of surface performance, drainage, crack mitigation, and regulation requirements.

Unlike contractors who treat court work as an add-on service, North State Resurfacing approaches every project with sport-specific expertise and attention to detail.

Long-Term Performance, Not Short-Term Fixes

Many resurfacing projects fail prematurely due to inadequate preparation or poor material selection. North State Resurfacing emphasizes proper foundation work, crack prevention, and surface integrity to extend the usable life of each court.

Our clients benefit from solutions that reduce recurring repair costs and minimize downtime for athletes and facility users.

Environmentally Responsible Court Surfacing Practices

Sustainability is not an afterthought at North State Resurfacing—it is a core operational priority. We actively seek ways to reduce waste, conserve resources, and lower emissions without sacrificing performance or quality.

Capturing and Reusing Water During Projects

One of our most impactful eco-friendly practices involves reclaiming water used to clean equipment during resurfacing projects:

Water used for cleaning brooms, blowers, and tools is collected in large containers instead of being discarded. This significantly reduces wastewater output while lowering overall water consumption.

Captured water is reused for other project-related tasks, reducing the need to source additional water and limiting environmental strain.

By reusing water rather than disposing of it, North State Resurfacing lowers costs and supports responsible water stewardship.

Use of Green Wise Certified Materials

All surface materials used by North State Resurfacing are Green Wise certified through the Coatings Research Group Incorporation (CRGI):

Certified materials are produced under rigorous environmental guidelines and subjected to ongoing testing.

Manufacturers must report test results directly to the certification body, ensuring consistency and compliance.

These materials contribute to cleaner, safer courts without compromising durability or play performance.

LEED-Qualified Manufacturing Processes

North State Resurfacing utilizes coating manufacturing processes that qualify for LEED Sustainable Sites Credit 7.1:

Manufacturing methods prioritize efficiency and waste reduction.

Projects may contribute toward LEED certification goals when applicable.

These processes reflect a commitment to modern, responsible construction standards.

Use of Recycled Materials in Court Construction

Recycled content plays an important role in many North State Resurfacing projects:

Materials such as old tires and plastics are repurposed and integrated into asphalt mixtures.

Using recycled components keeps waste materials out of landfills.

Recycled materials are processed to meet strict performance requirements while supporting sustainability goals.

Full Depth Reclamation for Asphalt Courts

North State Resurfacing offers a full depth reclamation process for reconstructing existing asphalt courts:

Existing asphalt and stone materials are recycled directly on-site and reused to rebuild the court foundation.

Eliminating off-site disposal lowers transportation-related emissions.

Clients receive a strong, stable base while benefiting from reduced project costs and environmental impact.

Innovative Crack Prevention with Polypave Court Shield

Cracking is one of the most common causes of premature court failure. North State Resurfacing addresses this issue with Polypave Court Shield, an advanced crack prevention system.

Extending Court Life Through Advanced Protection

Polypave Court Shield is designed to reduce reflective cracking on hard courts by reinforcing high-stress areas beneath the surface:

The system absorbs movement and reduces stress transfer through the surface.

Courts remain playable and visually consistent for longer periods.

Suitable for tennis, basketball, pickleball, and multi-use courts.

This proactive approach allows clients to protect their investment and avoid frequent resurfacing cycles.

Commitment to Community and Giving Back

North State Resurfacing believes in contributing to the communities around us. Our community projects provide an opportunity to give back while testing new techniques and materials in real-world environments.

With a wide variety of completed court construction and resurfacing efforts across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, we’ve contributed to the building of courts at public parks, schools, residential communities, recreational facilities, and more. These projects demonstrate our company’s reach and commitment to enhancing local amenities. Many of these efforts have provided local residents with safe, durable, and visually appealing athletic surfaces that support recreation, youth sports, and community engagement.
