Creating a Multi-Generational Sports Court: Design Considerations

If you own a recreation facility, a multi-sports court can be a perfect addition. This allows you to offer a variety of sports without having to invest in several different courts. These types of courts are also a great asset to your home, allowing you to play a different game whenever you want.

What is a Multi-Sport Game Court?

A multi-sport game court consists of a single-playing surface with multiple lines that are painted to separate the fields for each sport. These courts are designed to maximize the use of limited space by allowing different activities in the same area. They can be used to play:

  • Basketball

  • Tennis

  • Pickleball

  • Volleyball

  • Badminton

  • Soccer

  • Dodgeball

  • Paddle Tennis

If you know these different sports will be played, a multi-sport game court can be your best option. It’s cost-effective and versatile.

Considerations of a Multi-Sport Court

If you are thinking about building a multi-sport court at your home or business, there are several things you’ll want to consider:

Size

It’s important to measure your space so you know how much space you have to work with. The size of your multi-sport court will vary depending on the sports you plan to play and the amount of space you have. A standard-size multi-sport court is typically 30′ by 60′ or 1800 square feet.

Keep the size of other sports courts in mind:

  • A regulation-size tennis court is 78 feet long and 36 feet wide. The court is divided in half by a net that is three feet high.

  • Pickleball court dimensions are 44 feet long and 20 feet wide.

  • A standard basketball court is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. A centerline divides the court in half. A standard half-court is 47 feet long and 50 feet wide.

  • A badminton court is 44 feet long and 20 feet wide and is divided by a net that is five feet high.

When installing a multi-sports court, the dimensions will vary depending on the sports that will be played. If you plan on playing all of the sports mentioned above, you’ll want to make the court at least 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. The most common configuration is a full-size tennis court with four pickleball courts and a half-court basketball setup.

Cost

You’ll want to consider your budget before constructing your multi-sport court. The cost will vary depending on the size, location, and type of surface. Installation costs can vary between $4 and $17 per square foot.

Location

Consider the court layout, fencing needs, and lighting requirements when you think about the location of the court. You also want to think about the direction the game court is facing because sun glare can cause some issues.

Permits

Be sure to get the necessary permits and city approvals for your multi-sports court.

Benefits of a Multi-Sport Court

There are many benefits of installing a multi-sport court whether you’re adding it to a residential or commercial property.

Good for All Ages

A multi-sport court is good for all ages and skill levels. It’s a great investment for a recreation facility or a private home.
